Lead Carpenter

JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Summary

The Lead Carpenter is responsible for delivering completed remodeling projects on time, on budget, and with a delighted client.

This is done by (1) executing carpentry activities at the highest skill level, and (2) on-site project management, including scheduling, tracking the project budget, and ensuring that company policies and procedures are upheld. 

This individual:

Work Hours & Location

This is a full-time position averaging approximately 40-45 hours/week. Work hours are primarily between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Work is to be performed both at our office/warehouse, located at 780 Eden Rd., Lancaster, PA, and on location at job sites (typically within 30 minutes of our Lancaster office).

Key Responsibilities

Project Construction & Management

  • Perform carpentry at the highest level as required.
  • Ensure jobsite safety, protection, and maintenance of company tools, and enforce all jobsite rules.
  • Read and interpret paperwork, including all plans and specifications, purchase orders, subcontractor work orders, and cost updates.
  • Understand the scope of the work and discuss all requests for additional work with the Production Manager and Sales Staff.
  • Order materials and coordinate trade partners with the Production Manager.
  • Responsible for ensuring end-of-day procedures are handled (clean-up, weather protection and security). Notify clients in advance of service interruption.
  • Supervise laborers, carpenters, and trade partners, including participating in performance reviews. Make work assignments, monitor quality, and motivate crew.
  • Expedite timely completion of the work to maintain schedule and budget goals.
  • Request help as needed, anticipating the need for additional carpenters so they can be scheduled in a timely fashion.
  • Responsible for reporting problems with schedules and keeping the Production Manager informed of job status.

Team Collaboration & Administration

  • Participate in pre-construction conference, jobsite inspections, local building department inspections, and final inspections.
  • Act as a customer liaison and primary contact throughout the project.
  • Maintain an operational inventory of necessary tools, equipment, and vehicles to perform specific activities assigned by the Production Manager.
  • Train and mentor developing carpenters.

Customer Service

  • Ensure company and customer satisfaction through professional appearance, expert workmanship, and polite, timely communication.
  • Ensure the image of the company is supported by the appearance and activities of the installation teams and job sites.

Requirements

Technical Skills

  • Diverse knowledge of custom residential remodeling and construction, including practices, procedures, techniques, tools and equipment, materials, specifications, and quality control. Skills include the following:
  • Constructs, maintains, alters, and repairs building components and structures made of wood and other building materials.
  • Saws, fits, and erects exterior and interior trim
  • Installs locks and other building hardware
  • Assembles and works from scaffolds
  • Operates various types of electrical hand tools such as routers, jigsaws, nail guns, etc.
  • Ability to work from blueprints, sketches, and verbal instructions to obtain dimensions and finished specifications for projects.
  • Skilled in organization and management, with a strong understanding of production and efficiency.
  • Must own generally acceptable hand tools and cordless drill. Heavy-duty tools will be provided by McLennan Contracting.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Minimum 6 years construction experience (remodeling experience preferred)
  • Must have a good working knowledge of related building trades, such as electrical, plumbing, and HVAC.
  • Knowledge of state and local building codes, safety regulations, and practices pertinent to the construction industry.
  • Fully competent using a smartphone for digital communication and accessing apps.

Not Required (But Nice to Have)

  • Experience with project management software such as Buildertrend, CoConstruct, or Jobtread.
  • Experience creating estimates for change orders and small projects.
  • Competency with Apple products and operating systems (iPhone, iPad, Macbook)
