A Home That Finally Keeps Up With Family Life
Project Goals:
-
Improve daily function for a growing family
- Create a more open, connected layout
- Maximize storage without expanding the footprint
Kitchen Cost Category: Midrange Designer
Project Overview
This remodel was all about creating a home that works better for a growing family. With two daughters getting older, the lack of a main-level bathroom and a closed-off kitchen were starting to impact everyday routines.
By rethinking the layout and adding smart storage solutions, the home now feels more connected, functional, and welcoming for both daily life and hosting.

Scope of Work
This project focused on improving flow, storage, and everyday convenience by rethinking the main living spaces and adding a new bathroom within the existing footprint.
In the kitchen, we reworked the layout to create a more open connection to the adjoining room, including a passthrough with a countertop overhang that provides casual seating for homework and daily routines. New cabinetry was installed to increase storage and organization, and the portable dishwasher was replaced with a built-in unit for improved functionality. The space was further refreshed with new countertops, backsplash, fixtures, and updated flooring to create a cohesive, durable finish.
To address the family’s need for an additional restroom, we designed and constructed a new main-level half bathroom, completing the necessary plumbing, electrical, and ventilation updates along with new fixtures and lighting.
Throughout the project, we coordinated solutions for plumbing and venting typical of an older city home and updated trim and finishes to ensure a seamless transition between spaces.

During Project Development, we explored several layout options to ensure the final plan balanced openness, storage, and the addition of the new half bathroom without compromising the kitchen’s functionality. Once the homeowners felt confident in the direction, the project moved smoothly into production. The pre-production phase, including the ordering of materials, determining product lead times, and scheduling with trade partners, spanned just over a month. Because the home is an older city property, additional coordination was required to plan for plumbing and venting, which we worked through with our trade partners early to avoid delays. With those details resolved, the project progressed steadily, resulting in a thoughtful transformation that supports the family’s needs today and into the future. Once construction began, this kitchen remodel was completed in approximately 12 weeks. While that timeline was longer than a typical kitchen remodel, holiday scheduling and the added scope of opening the layout and constructing a new half bathroom required additional coordination to ensure every detail was done right.
