Home design trends in 2024 offer a good microcosmic view into the priorities of our society: a focus on peace, wellness, simplicity, fun, and self-expression. We’re all looking to tell our story through our homes, making them unique reflections of ourselves and our families. If you’re looking for some ideas for your home, dig into these emerging design movements of 2024 and see if they inspire you.

#1. Quiet Luxury

With its focus on classic and elevated materials and timeless design principles, Quiet Luxury is a style we can get behind. This style is all about understated elegance and refined simplicity. It emphasizes high-quality and natural materials such as marble, wood, and stone, clean lines and traditional furniture, and gorgeous neutral colors. The idea behind Quiet Luxury is that the basics will never go out of style and that our homes can be both completely comfortable and stunningly elegant.

Quiet Luxury is about embracing quality materials and classic design rather than continuing to fill your home with the latest trends and fads. It’s like owning one tailored, well-made blazer instead of three off-the-rack trendy outfits. It’s about focusing on the details and making a subtle statement with your home.

While Quiet Luxury has some similarities to Minimalism, they’re not the same thing. Quiet Luxury layers thoughtfully-chosen and lush materials and textures where Minimalism prizes white space. Quiet Luxury balances comfort and simplicity, and Minimalism finds comfort in simplicity.

If you love the look and feel of Quiet Luxury, you’re in good company. Many people are returning to the basics—the elevated basics—for homes that are gorgeous, welcoming, and will not go out of style. You can bring this design style into your home by

  • focusing on quality materials that will look great now and also age better over time
  • choosing clean lines and timeless silhouettes
  • using well-made and unique items instead of big box store purchases (look in flea markets and antique stores)
  • sticking to subtle colors and layered textures
  • remembering that less is more: choose a few curated items to display
  • hanging unique art—it doesn’t have to be expensive, just something you love.

#2. Maximalism

On the other end of the spectrum from Quiet Luxury, we find a different style rising to the top in 2024. Maximalism is about bold design, fun, and personal expression. With a “more is more” mantra, the Maximalist home features an abundance of bold colors and patterns working together to create an interesting, eye-catching home. This design style is clearly seen on the runway: the fashion industry is leading the way to Maximalism with bright colors and extravagant pieces.

Maximalism focuses on creating visually dynamic and opulent spaces by using jewel tones with pops of neon, bold patterns like zebra stripes and leopard print, and dramatic accessories like sculptures and large-scale artwork. It takes a good eye and a sense of balance to pull off a great Maximalist design—you want it to be visually interesting and bold but not overwhelming and chaotic.

If you want to try your hand at the fun, vibrant Maximalist design, here are some tips to get you started:

  • Maximalism is all about the layers. You want a variety of patterns and designs like rugs on top of rugs, blankets and throw pillows piled on the couch, and art on bookshelves. Think about where you can add another layer of interest and fun to what you already have and give it a try!
  • Remember the watchwords of Maximalism: vibrant, unique, colorful, eclectic, and bold.
  • Look for ways to add interesting and one-of-a-kind items to your home: colorful local artwork, a table or ottoman with a unique shape, a faux fur throw, etc. Sometimes shopping at thrift and vintage stores gives you a better chance of finding something unique.
  • You want lots of color, lots of patterns, and lots of visually interesting places for your eye to rest—but put it together slowly and with intention so it has a curated feel instead of a chaotic one.

#3. Biophilic Design

Biophilic design—where nature and our connection to it is emphasized in a variety of ways in the home—is one of the major design trends we see in 2024. In our fast-paced, connected world, biophilia gives us a way to slow down and be more grounded as we enjoy the natural world from the comfort of home. The biophilic style focuses on wellness and relaxation by bringing natural elements into the design of the home.

Biophilia focuses on three main elements: direct nature, indirect nature, and space and place considerations. Direct nature means that the design actually brings the outside in through natural light (well-placed skylights, large windows, etc), indoor plants, water features, and more. Indirect nature means that natural materials like wood, glass, stone, and leather are used wherever possible, nature-inspired colors are featured throughout the home, and artwork depicting natural scenes is common. Space and place considerations relates to highlighting transitional spaces like patios and decks, as well as making the home feel like a refuge.

Biophilic design is also eco-conscious and prioritizes such practices as installing energy-efficient appliances, lightbulbs, and windows, using water-saving devices, and using high-quality home insulation.

If the peace and serenity of Biophilic design appeals to you, try the following to bring it into your space:

  • Add indoor plants. Not only do they look great, but they clean the air and raise your mood!
  • Focus on organic shapes, natural materials, and warmth.
  • Open your curtains wide and allow as much natural light into your space as you can.
  • Try your hand at gardening—even if you don’t have much space outdoors, growing something in a container is a great way to increase your contact with nature.
  • If you’re remodeling, consider adding windows or a skylight.
  • Spend some time making a deck or patio inviting: add string lights, use comfortable furniture, and consider a water feature or fire pit as a focal point.

#4. Brutalism

A style that is taking 2024 by storm, Brutalism design focuses on industrial vibes, simple and rough materials, and the absence of unnecessary decor. While it may seem like a strange name for a design style in the home, Brutalism can actually be warm and welcoming. It has a straightforward and honest feel to it.

Brutalism emphasizes the raw beauty of materials like brass, concrete, and wood. Clean, solid lines and anything industrial make the Brutalist look stand out. Brutalism leans toward dark, rich colors and uses the warmth of wood and the natural beauty of plants to soften it. It’s a modern and minimalist look that you may find yourself really enjoying.

To bring a little Brutalism into your home, give the following ideas a try:

  • Use a dark and rich color palette: grays, browns, soft blacks, and dark golds.
  • Keep surfaces and bookshelves uncluttered. Use a few carefully chosen items to display.
  • Wrought iron, patinaed brass, and tarnished metal all have their place in Brutalist design. Incorporate them as lighting fixtures, decor, and hardware throughout your home.
  • Use unfinished cement for your fireplace, floors, countertops, or even an end table.

Bonus: Five Trends You Can Integrate Into Any Style

While these design trends aren’t styles unto themselves, their popularity is rising. You can incorporate them into any type of home for an instant injection of on-trend flair.

#1. The Color Brown

Sometimes referred to as Latte Decorating, brown is emerging as a feature color in the home this year. Think of velvety-rich walls, warm brown textiles, and neutral, nature-inspired spaces that are calming, luxurious, and deep.

#2. Secondary Spaces

Butler’s pantries, back kitchens, wet bars, and coffee corners are becoming more and more popular. With a desire to keep the main spaces of the home clean and uncluttered, these secondary spaces become the workhorses, providing areas to prepare food, store china, mix drinks, make coffee, and keep messes out of sight.

#3. Unique Tiles

Tiled floors, tiled walls, tiled bathrooms and kitchens—tile is growing in popularity with unique tile patterns and designs as the most prominent choice. Illustrated tiles, which are hand-painted with botanical motifs or characters from folk stories add a fun, artistic flair to the home. And checkerboard anything from floors to shower walls is on-trend and delightful.

#4. Curves of All Types

Curved furniture from couches to coffee tables, kitchen islands with curved edges, and even curvy and unique mirror shapes are becoming more prominent features in home design. These shapes contrast with the typical corners and straight edges to add luxury and whimsy to your home.

#5. Tech-Integrated Spaces

With smart homes on the rise, tech-inspired interiors are becoming more common. Technology can give you the ability to control your home’s ambiance through temperature, lighting, music, and more. Start off small with smart plugs (which make any device you plug into them “smart” and able to be controlled via an app), smart doorbells, and smart thermostats. If you find that you enjoy the convenience, security, and energy-saving benefits, you can upgrade your whole house to operate as a smart home.
