Kitchen Islands: Functional and Stylish Centerpieces

Topics: Kitchen Remodeling

Kitchen islands are one of the most important design features in today’s kitchens. Far from just being a single-use space, they are truly the heart of the kitchen. Modern kitchen islands provide a variety of functions, from space for food prep to gathering with loved ones to homework stations and more. Your kitchen island can also make a visual statement, adding character and style to your space.

The best kitchen islands are designed to support the homeowners’ cooking habits, entertaining styles, and personal needs. They maximize storage and fit the overall layout of the space. A great kitchen island layout for a home remodel brings together the right design, materials, and layout to create an inviting and functional space.

Whether you’re dreaming of an expansive kitchen island with room to gather or a small but highly functional one for extra food prep space, considering the function and design of your island will help make your kitchen the best it can be.

Start With Function: Designing an Island That Works Hard

The most functional kitchens are usually divided into zones: food prep, cooking, and clean-up. An island can handle some or all of these zones, or it can help make your work around the perimeter of the kitchen more functional.

Functional kitchen island features might include some of the following:

  • Dedicated room for food prep, including integrated cutting boards and pull-out drawers for extra space.
  • Built-in cooktops so you can tend to your meal while you visit with loved ones.
  • An integrated sink for easy clean-up. Workstation sinks are very popular—they include built-in ledges that hold custom accessories like draining racks, serving trays, cutting boards, and much more.
  • A dishwasher drawer to make clean-up even simpler.
  • Lots of storage.

Good Flow, Great Layout

When designers talk about flow, they mean the efficiency and comfort of the space’s layout. How easy is it for people to move from one place to another within the kitchen? Good flow minimizes steps between zones and removes obstacles, making it easy to navigate the kitchen. A well-designed kitchen island will enhance flow, with a great layout and multifunctional design.

Make sure there is adequate clearance on every side of the island—design guidelines recommend 36-48 inches for ease of movement. And consider the best layout for the island as a way of supporting good flow.

  • What shape is best for your space? Rectangular, square, and even rounded islands are possible (check out Stefanie and Dave’s rounded kitchen island!)
  • In smaller kitchens, peninsulas (rather than true islands) provide the same functionality while minimizing the footprint.
  • Consider what size will best support your kitchen design. Kitchen islands can be any size, but many small kitchens use 2 x 4-foot islands, while larger ones can be 3 x 6-feet or bigger. Remember to include about 24 inches of width per barstool to make seating comfortable.

Brian and Kelsey’s Willow Street Kitchen Remodel is a great example of how island size and layout can impact the kitchen’s flow. Check out the before-and-after to see how the island completely changed the feel of the space.

Smart Storage: Making the Island Work Harder

One of the best things about kitchen islands is the enhanced storage they offer. By reducing clutter elsewhere in the kitchen, kitchen islands offer storage solutions that change the whole function of the space.

  • Cabinets and deep drawers can hold pots and pans, dishes, small appliances, and more.
  • Pull-out trash can cabinets hide your trash can while keeping it nearby.
  • Open shelving can add both function and personality. Use them for cookbooks or decorative dishes.
  • Use designated appliance storage (cabinets or drawers) for mixers, toasters, blenders, and more. You can also install electrical outlets for true ease of use.
  • Pull-out prep shelves add extra workspace as needed.

Seating and Social Spaces

Today’s kitchen islands are as much about gathering as they are about cooking. As the kitchen’s centerpiece, the island can be a comfortable and functional space to sit and do homework, work from home, enjoy a casual meal, or linger over a coffee in the morning.

A kitchen island with seating might include a dual-height counter, with a lower side for working and a higher one for socializing. Or you might decide that an extra-wide island is perfect for your space, giving a natural separation between the cook’s work and the guests’ seating.

If space is a concern, choose backless stools that can be tucked under the island’s overhang when not in use. If you have the room in your kitchen, and the layout supports it, an L-shaped island might allow for seating along two sides—perfect if you like to host a crowd.

And don’t forget to include charging stations, which are handy for teens and adults alike. Modern islands often include USB ports as well as regular outlets.

The Island as a Centerpiece

Because the island sits in the center of the kitchen and is such a large feature, it often becomes the focal point of the space. You can capitalize on this by making sure it’s as visually stunning as it is practically functional.

Contrasting Colors and Materials

One of the most popular—and beautiful—design strategies for kitchen island remodels is to create contrast between the island and the rest of the kitchen. To do this, you can make the cabinets, the countertop, or both a contrasting color and/or material. For example, use a bold accent color for the island. Make the island’s countertop butcher block when the surrounding counters are quartz. Or make the kitchen island out of stained wood when the rest of the cabinets are painted. For a great example of a kitchen with a contrasting island, check out Rodney and Ruth’s Lancaster Kitchen Remodel.

Lovely Details

The kitchen island is the perfect place to add special features or design details to set it apart and make it unforgettable. A waterfall edge, for example, creates a sleek, contemporary look that feels luxurious. Fluted or reeded details are at the top of the list of modern kitchen design trends. And countertops of natural stone—quartz, marble, soapstone, etc—give it a grounded look.

Lighting That Adds Drama

Pendant lighting above the island defines the space visually within an open floor plan while adding personality and drama to the whole kitchen. Use kitchen island lighting as an opportunity to add your own unique flair to the space. Your designer can help you decide how many pendants you need, both for task lighting and visual balance. A good rule of thumb is to space pendants between 24 and 30 inches from center to center.

For a glimpse of what a difference lighting over a kitchen island can make, Jon and Crystal’s Conestoga Valley Kitchen Remodel is a great example.
